Witten Advances on Opening Day at Kentucky Bank Championships

Saturday was opening day of qualification play in the men’s draw

 

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Saturday marked the opening day of action at the 2018 Kentucky Bank Tennis Championships in Lexington, which was headlined by former Kentucky Wildcat Jesse Witten (USA) advancing past N. Vijay Sundar Prasanth (IND) in straight sets to book his spot into the second round of men’s qualifications.

Witten broke early in both sets and then consolidated those breaks to hold on for a 6-4, 6-4 win in straight sets and advance into Sunday’s play for the second-straight year. Witten will face off against Mikael Torpegaard (DEN), who blitzed past Pavel Krainik (CAN) 6-2, 6-2 on the second show court at the Boone Varsity Tennis Center in Lexington.

Chile’s Jorge Montero (CHI) had one of the more thrilling wins of the day, beating Enzo Wallert (FRA) in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 on the second show court. Montero was ahead and serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set before Wallert broke for five all and ended up winning the tiebreak to push the match to a third set. In the third, Montero picked up a break a handful of games into the frame, and etched out a three-set win with a 6-3 mark in the third.

In the final two matches of the day, Ruan Roelofse (RSA) beat Kento Takeuchi (JPN) in straight sets and [WC] Austin Hussey (USA) def. [WC] Alex Kobelt (USA) in straights as well.

Sunday is the final day of men’s qualifying, as play will begin at 9 a.m. ET from the Boone Tennis Center in Lexington. Admission will be free for the second day in a row, with a variety of concession items available for sale in the complex for patrons in attendance.

Lexington Challenger Tennis Charity, Inc.  ((LCTCI a 501(c)3) dba)) Kentucky Bank Tennis Championships was organized in 2012 by a core group of conscience minded citizens with the purpose to raise charitable funds to benefit the local and state community. The idea initiated with the opportunity to generate money through a key event that came available- the Kentucky Bank Tennis Championships, a USTA Pro Circuit Tennis Tournament for Men and Women.  This event along with many other fundraising throughout the year will provide the resources to disperse funds to other charities in the community that operate with like minded missions. The tournament has been held in Lexington, KY at the UK Hilary J. Boone Center for 24 years.
