Four Women Advance to Main Draw in Qualifying

By Nick Whitaker

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Four women qualified Tuesday for the main draw of the Kentucky Bank Tennis Championships being held this week at the University of Kentucky’s Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.

American Alexandra Mueller advanced to the main draw after beating Emily Webley-Smith of Great Britain, 6-2, 6-2. Going into the main draw Mueller said she has a little bit of an advantage since she has already won a few matches here. Maria Sanchez, from the United States, defeated Russian Marina Shamayko, 6-0, 6-2. Sanchez will advance to the main draw after a triumphant win over the No. 7 seed.

From the United States, wild card Jennifer Brady beat Canadian Carol Zhao, 6-3, 6-4. Brady said that her forehand was working well and that she feels pretty confident going into the main draw. The last qualifying spot for the women’s singles main draw went to Kristie Ahn who defeated Asia Muhammad, both from the United States, 7-6(9), 3-6, 6-3. Ahn, a recent graduate of Stanford University, said the hot weather worked to her advantage after recently training in Florida. She is another wild card, and she said she is “a lot more confident” after earning a qualifying spot in the main draw.

All of the qualifying women will play in the main draw Wednesday, with matches starting at 10 a.m.
