Doubles Champions Crowned, Singles Championship Sunday Set

Doubles champions crowned

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The doubles champions were crowned on Saturday night at the 2018 Kentucky Bank Tennis Championships with Ena Shibahara (USA) and Hailey Carter (USA) taking home the trophy on the women’s side, and Robert Galloway (USA) and Roberto Maytin (VEN) winning on the men’s side.

Both matches were straight-forward in straight sets and comprehensively decisive wins. Shibahara/Carter won 6-3, 6-1 on court two with early breaks in each set and then a dazzling display of shotmaking down the stretch to win the final five games and defeat Sanaz Mirand (USA) and Victoria Rodriguez (MEX).

In the men’s doubles final, Galloway and Maytin had business on their mind from the outset and got up an early break at 2-1 in the opening frame of action. They went on to consolidate their way to a first-set win and then backed it up with two breaks in the second set to take home the doubles title.

In singles, the finals are now set with an all-American final on the women’s side set for 1 p.m. ET between Asia Muhammad (USA) and Ann Li (USA). Muhammad needed just two sets to oust Quinn Gleason (USA) 6-4, 6-4. Muhammad broke at 4-2 in the second set and faced three break points the very next game but used the power of her serve to move into the finals. In a three-set thriller interrupted by rain for about an hour, Ann Lii (USA) lost the first set 6-2, but rallied to take the final two sets in the heat of the day 6-3, 6-4 to book her ticket in tomorrow’s final.

In the men’s semifinals, it was a 6-1, 6-3 win for Lloyd Harris (AUS) over Joris De Loore (BEL) in the opening match of the day. Harris was impressive all day, never being broken during the course of the match. In the second semifinal, No. 8 Stefano Napolitano (ITA) marched into the final over Y. Chung (KOR) 7-5, 6-3. It was 5-5 in the opening set before Napolitano drew first blood with a break for 6-5 and then served out a 7-5 opening set. In the second, Chung – who had played tough, physical matches all week, finally wore down and Napolitano capitalized and won 6-3.

Napolitano and Harris will face off on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET for the title. Championship Sunday presented by Michelob Ultra will open its gates to fans at Noon ET on the main stadium courts.
